Simulating Ultra-Sensitive Gas Sensors Using Plasmonic Nanostructures

Conclusion

We reported a design to plasmonic based fiber optics gas sensors using gold nano-particles deposited above the fiber tip. In this design, the gold nano-particles have different shapes which can be spherical, cubical, cylindrical, or conical. It is found that, the refractive index sensitivity of the optical sensor based on conical shape gold-nano particles exhibits both resonance wavelength and peak intensity sensitivity are 296 nm/RIU and 44%/RIU respectively, which give an overall high sensitivity. On the other hand, the conical shape gives a narrow and stable line width, and high figure of merit 17.6 and 23.6.

The figure illustrate the (a) Layout of the designed fiber optic gas sensor structure. (b) A unit cell of the designed structure.
